Business Design – Requirements for Leadership

Identifying and capturing opportunities for future company growth, be it refined services, simplified customer experience, cost cutting technology implementations, new products or whatever it may be, is exhilarating. But, it’s actually often the most straight forward part of the job, looking at the process purely objectively. What can come as a surprise, is the consequences it has on leadership.

In change management circles, research and literature, there’s little debating the need for an updated view on successful leadership in an age of overwhelming uncertainty, perpetual change and need for constant speed. You don’t have to venture into a change management initiative to get a first hand experience of this. To varying degrees, it happens through business design sprints and projects too.

 

Including the leadership aspect

Combining the latest leadership research with a collaborative and hands-on design, we help you reflect on some key issues with leadership models today and explore what the learnings and increasingly shared practices from leadership in fast and change prone organizations tell us. Some key focus areas are leadership and uncertainty, the increased value of values and principles, distributed and collaborative leadership and much more.

We do not get to reorganization and organizational change management. That is a highly structural question. We affect individual leadership. Participants can practice what they take with them within any structure. If it’s not actionable, it’s frustrating.

We have created a leadership development program for internal leaders and leadership teams (or for open groups, when applicable) of 8-12 participants. The core team members running the program are UGL coaches, certified in neuroleadership and often use GDQ in group development.

Business Design Sprints

In business design sprints and programs we work towards a clearly defined goal which in turn is connected to an overarching objective for the client.

We work with clear focus questions, move quickly, focus on action and stay clear of bloating, theoretical, scope of work. Working iteratively helps create momentum and a sense of accomplishment for the team as well as keeping waste of time and money at a minimum, as we include learnings that we draw right into the work process.

For example…

Focus areas and focus questions are key. A focus area could be Artificial Intelligence. A good one in this day and age. Exploring how/what AI could do for a business is an interesting one and could have a clear goal of building a numer of prototypes or pilots in a certain amount of time, that explore and test how a set of processes or activities within a company could start benefitting from applying AI technologies.

Focus questions – representing problems and/or opportunities for a client – are specific but at the same time broad enough to be explored in a way that leads to many potentially interesting tests and applications. How might we simplify customer support issues? Or a more directional one with an “opportunity twist” might be how might we help seniors in care homes feel closer to family?
